Hello all
I was wondering about new future librairies . Will we have to do a "rebuilt database" each time and therefore lose the notion of favorites? what can we do to avoid losing them?

Rebuilding the database should NOT lose your favorites. Unify saves your favorites out to a file first, then rebuilds the database, then re-reads the favorites file.

If this does not work for you, please let us know.

Thank you Shane for your reply .

the last time when I wanted to add John's latest ARP patch to the UNIFY library, I rebuilt the database and all the favorites markers were deleted. What is the function that you recommend to recover them?

If your favorites were lost, I'm sorry to say, they are lost. There is no way to recover them unless you have a backup of the presets.db file.

I did see this behavior after installing the new BPM patch. I had a few favorites marked and yesterday I loaded a patch I thought should have been flagged as such. It confused me, but I did not stop to think about it because it did not seem important then. Guess this can happen, but it did not really disturb me enough to even think about it until I saw this post. Still not a biggie to me.

It seems there's a bug in the process somewhere. I haven't seen it here, and until I can reproduce it, I can't fix it.

Anyone suffering from this (and I apologize to you!) should please post more details, in particular their operating system and where they have set the main Unify data folder. (There could be a problem with folder permissions.)

I did check and all my favorite markings are gone. This is on Windows 10 with standard locations for Unify files. I checked on Sonar, Reaper and Studio One and as you would expect the markings are gone for those instances. Do you know where the saved favorites file would reside or is it deleted after the rebuild / remarking process?

Check in the Libraries folder under the main Unify data folder, for a file called favorites.xml. If it's there and contains anything (you can open in a text editor to check), make a safe copy of it immediately.

Every time you rebuild the patch database, Unify overwrites this file with your current favorites, so if you've rebuilt more than once, the file may be empty except for an XML header and some opening/closing tags.

Are you on Mac or PC? I've tested this on Windows and it always works for me, so I'm not sure why it's failing for you.

I see, OK, I have a thought. I just looked at the file, it had only one favorite. I currently had two favorites clicked, but had not done a rebuild since I lost my favorites. I added a few more favorites just for the hell of it and rebuilt the patch database. The favorites held and the xml file had the full list to match.

I am on a PC btw.

However, my feeling is that I am not a good test. Before the latest update, I had a problem with the rebuild. In the previous version, Unify would crash everytime I did a rebuild by clicking rebuild in the upper right corner. I found that using the "Rebuild Now" in the settings did not crash and therefore I used that. In the newest version, the rebuild icon on the upper right corner works fine.

My feeling is probably back when the rebuild was crashing I lost my favorites. I probably just did not notice because I never really focused on the "favorites" marker until I saw this error post.

OK, let's consider this case closed for now, but post again if Unify ever starts crashing again when rebuilding the patch database.

Having no problems now for sure. The crashes were occurring when I was trying install one of the old User Unify Patch files.

I hope you still have the feature to allow exchanging our Patch files in mind.

I have an idea to re-mark all my favorites and then do a rebuild. Then I could backup my favorites xml file created for the rebuild in the event of another such loss.

Features for patch exchange are coming, but I am overwhelmed with issues, so please be patient.

This is a good idea, but note that right now there is no function in Unify to import such an XML file, so if you lost your favorites again, the best you could do would be to open the backup XML file in a text editor and re-favorite all patches you see in the list there.

We'll need a LOT more detail to diagnose this problem.

It would be better to start a new forum topic for this; it has nothing to do with the original post.

Hello Shane

So if I understood correctly, to avoid losing your favorites the right procedure would be:
1/make a backup of the favorites.xml file
2/do "rebuild patch database"
3/and if the favorites have disappeared, put the backup of favorites.xml in the folder.

Is this right ?

The way I look at it, you have your favorites marked. If you look at the xml, you should see the names of your favorites listed. You can back this up.

In fact, back it up each time you had or remove favorites. Now you have something that lists your current favorites.

Shane has stated that this at least can be used as a reference if you lose your favorites and want to know the ones you had marked.

If a problem occurs when you find you have lost your favorites. The Unify xml file may or may not have a correct list of favorites, but you back up will.

My thought would be since this problem has only occured for me when there was a problem with the rebuild that I have a method to attempt to have Unify restore my favorites. This would be to replace the problem Unify list with my backup and then attempt another rebuild. But it seems that Shane is indicating that even if I replaced that favorites xml, the process of doing the rebuild would overlay the good list again with an empty list.

What might be simple and helpful would be a process/ button that would allow setting favorites based on the xml list without doing any of the rebuild. I'm sure Shane already has the code that does the setting of the favorites from this list.

No problem with the "patch exchange" task ... you set the priorities. Having spent my coding life building numerous change request lists, I respect the coder's desired order of completion 🙂
