Drag/Drop behavior is non-standard

I reported this via email several days ago, but since it's still present in 1.0.6 I thought it should get onto the forum.

When I drop a .guru file onto the GUI, if another app (e.g., my file explorer) is covering a significant portion of the GUI, the drop is disallowed (x in circle pointer). If I then move the other app off the Unify GUI, the drop is still disallowed EXCEPT in the area that has just been uncovered.

If the Unify GUI is never obstructed by another app, then dropping seems to work fine, but still not over the entire GUI. It's as if certain areas are "live" for dropping, while other areas don't allow the drop.

I'm still trying to reproduce the issues you have described, which others have reported as well. As far as I know, this is only a problem on Windows. Do you use Mac or Windows?

I use a PC running Windows 10 as my primary development machine. Drag-and-drop has always worked for me, even when Unify's GUI is almost completely covered by other apps/windows, so it's frustrating that I somehow can't see what others are clearly seeing.

It's now very clear to us that relying on drag-and-drop was a bad idea. The next version of Unify will feature a "load .guru file" button on the Settings page, which will raise an ordinary file-open dialog. Drag-and-drop will still work for those that can use it, but this button will provide a simpler, completely reliable alternative.

Oh, sorry -- Windows 10, latest updates. New machine, with mainly music-related apps loaded. Still very clean.

I wonder if there's some other app that pollutes the drag/drop handling. I'll scout around for that. It's interesting that others have a similar experience with this. I've written a number of drag/drop features over the years, and I've never seen this before. Nor have I ever seen the jerky app dragging I reported in another thread. Both involve dragging ... could there be a connection? If some background task were, say, too aggressively polling the mouse position for some unrelated purpose, it might end up stealing events in some way. Just wildly speculatin' .... I'll look around for an app that could be uninstalled and might be doing something behind the scenes. A keyboard macro processor? I do have Hotkeys running, so I'll kill that first thing when I'm back in the studio.

Since you have 3 monitors, I also wonder if that makes this particular weirdness less likely to occur (though heaven knows why).

A few users have now observed that drag/drop is apparently unavailable in Windows, if you run the Unify app as Administrator. I haven't a clue why this would be.

Anyway, just be patient. The v1.0.7 update coming this week eliminates the dependency on drag/drop:

  • On systems where drag/drop works, it will still work.
  • A new "Select .guru file..." button has been added to the Settings page. This presents a normal open-file dialog, and when you select a .guru file, it will process it exactly as if you'd drag/dropped it.
  • The first-time install coaching dialogs have been adjusted to work the same way. Instead of telling the user to hit OK, then find the .guru file and drag/drop it, they simply pop up the open-file dialog immediately when OK is hit.

I just got Unifiy 1.06 yesterday and I could not install Unify Standard Library.guru, but Unify basics.guru library  installed  in Windows 7.  What was the difference betweeen the two.

The Unify Standard Library.guru file I downloaded was actually folder named Unify Standard Library, not the Unify Standard Library.guru shown before you download. The Unify basics.guru library download was named as Unify basics.guru.

It seems the Unify Standard Library folder has not been processed  into a  .guru file and therfore will not load in Windows, as Unify expects a .guru file.

The Unify Basics.guru file just sets up the Unify Presets folder plus a User Library folder with one patch in it. The Unify Standard Library.guru file (2.3 GB) unpacks to the full 425-patch library with all included samples.

Where did you get the Unify Standard Library folder you said you downloaded? One other user reported something similar. We might have put the wrong files somewhere.

All  files directly from Pluginguru webste. I think you may have put the wrong files by mistake,  thay are pre .guru files. Files before you use before you  turn  them into .guru file format.

Do you have anything like a web-browser extension that automatically detects and opens Zip files? It might be that your browser is recognizing the downloaded .guru file as a Zip archive (which it is) and unzipping it automatically before you get a chance to see it.

Can you post a screenshot of what you downloaded, and what's inside the folder you got?

Solved.

It is the web-browser I was using Internet Explorer it changes the type to compressed. I used Firefox browser and it downloaded the file as .guru and it installed no problem.

A .guru file should have been inside a Zip folder to be downloaded when using Internet Explorer (like Unify Basics.guru file) for it to work using Internet Explorer. Otherwise a notice to use another browser to download a .guru file should be placed on libraries download page.

Regards

To everyone: it turns out "drag/drop doesn't work with apps run as Administrator" is PRECISELY STANDARD behavior on Windows 8 and up.

See https://superuser.com/questions/1172989/why-doesnt-usual-dragdrop-work-in-windows-10

This is a Windows UAC issue. Nothing to do with Unify at all.

Starting with Unify v1.0.7, you can use the new "Select .guru file..." button on the Unify Settings page instead of drag/drop.

@getdunne

I can also confirm that for WIN 8.1!

Loading via drag and drop of .dll and .guru files ONLY works if unify has been started WITHOUT administrator rights

Would still be perfect if the new button "Select guru file" could also load .dll's 😉

That would be (except scans and drag and drop) the 3rd possibility to load .dll's in Unify   😍

Good idea, but I'll add a "select plug-in file" option to the Operations menu on the Known Plugins view, to achieve the same result without the need for another button, but also keep the UI more consistent.
