I'm not aware of this problem. Please try to locate the .unify file for any patch that is misbehaving in this way, compress to a .zip file, and attach to a post here. I will analyze it and see if I can figure out what's going on.

It looks like you just made a copy of the .unify file and renamed it, adding the "2". Unify doesn't work that way. The patch name and library name are saved in the patch itself, and need not correspond to the file/folder names. See https://pluginguru.net/unify/manual/doku.php?id=playing-patches#patch_names_vs_file_names_and_some_tips

I re-saved your patch from within Unify, editing the name to add the "2" at the end, then zipped and attached it here. Unzip and replace your existing PAD -SunGoddess Pad Bells 2.unify file, and all will be well.

No, I didin't make a copy, I just made new edited patch from original patch with "save as"command.!!

And No, All is not well:

I downloaded your re-saved patch and replaced old one!

This is how it looks:

So it's correctly named!

But in Unify broser it looks like this:

And boxed one won't load , Unify loads original one above!

Well, this is interesting! Thank you for the follow-up, and I'm sorry we haven't got to the bottom of this yet.

Please try doing a FULL rebuild of your patch database, by holding down ALT when you click the lightning-bolt. Then check again to see if any "ghost patches" remain.

Please locate the file presets.db in Unify's Libraries folder, zip and attach here. I'll have a look and try to find out what's going on.

There are 11 patch names which appear more than once in your database:

BASS - Airwave Dance 08
BASS SPLIT - Deep Ac Bass and Ambient Dreams
BASS SPLIT - Deep Bass and FM/Steinway
BASS SPLIT - Plush Toys wiith Upright Bass and Piano
BELL - Bell Bar
BPM SPLIT - Chased In The Dark CG
DRUM KIT - OMG Pop Glitch
LEAD - Chatter
LEAD - Morning Rose
PAD -SunGoddess Pad Bells
PLUCK - Woody Snapper

Are any of these the ones that are acting up on your system? Are there any others that are showing this "ghost" behavior that are NOT on this list?

I have a bit more information about the 11 patch names. In some cases, I think it's the result of having older and newer versions of a file, where the older one didn't get overwritten, because the file name changed.

BASS - Airwave Dance 08
Original in Unify Standard Library, saved a copy in User Library w/ same patch name, file name "BASS - Airwave Dance Bass With Dim Pro.unify"

BASS SPLIT - Deep Ac Bass and Ambient Dreams
Two different .unify files with SAME patch name in PlugInGuru UniSCREAM 2020 library
2nd one is called "BASS SPLIT - Deep Bass and Ambient Dreamy leisure.unify"

BASS SPLIT - Deep Bass and FM/Steinway 2
Both .upf and .unify files in Unify Standard Library

BASS SPLIT - Plush Toys wiith Upright Bass and Piano
Two different .unify files with same patch name in User Library
2nd one is called "BASS SPLIT - Plush Toys with Upright Bass and Piano+Pad.unify"

BELL - Bell Bar
Original in Unify Standard Library, saved a copy in User Library w/ same patch name and file name

BPM SPLIT - Chased In The Dark CG
Two different .unify files with SAME patch name in PlugInGuru UniSCREAM 2020 library
2nd one is called "BPM - Chased In The Dark CG.unify"

DRUM KIT - OMG Pop Glitch
Two different .upf files (older, newer version?) in Unify Standard Library
older one is called "DRUM KIT - OMG Pop 1 Glitch.upf"

LEAD - Chatter
Two different .unify files with same name AND file name, in different libraries
Unified - Pendulate and Unified - Surge

LEAD - Morning Rose
Two different .unify files with SAME patch name in PlugInGuru UniSCREAM 2020 library
2nd one is called "PAD - Morning Rose 2 .unify"

PAD -SunGoddess Pad Bells
Two different .unify files with SAME patch name in User Library
2nd one is called "PAD -SunGoddess Pad Bells 2.unify"

PLUCK - Woody Snapper
Two different(?) .unify files with same name AND file name, in different libraries
Unify Standard Library and PlugInGuru CloudCity V1

At least some of these pairs of patches should be able to load separately, despite the similarity of names. Please tell me which ones do not, and ESPECIALLY, please tell me if there are any other patches you can't load, so I can try to figure out why not.

BASS - Airwave Dance 08 - THIS IS ACTING STANGE , I TRIED TO SAVE AS Airwave Fretless Bass BUT I CAN'T,IT MADE GHOST PATCH-DOUBLE I ALREASY ERASED!
BASS SPLIT - Deep Ac Bass and Ambient Dreams YES GHOST -DOUBLE
BASS SPLIT - Deep Bass and FM/Steinway  ALSO GHOST DOUBLE THAT WON'T LOAD, ONLY ORGINAL ABOVE LOADS
BASS SPLIT - Plush Toys wiith Upright Bass and Piano GHOST DOUBLE TOO
BELL - Bell Bar NOT GHOST
BPM SPLIT - Chased In The Dark CG THIS IS GHOST PATCH TOO
DRUM KIT - OMG Pop Glitch ALSO GHOST PATCH
LEAD - Chatter NOT GHOST- OTHER ONE IS FROM SURGE AND OTHER FROM PENDULATE, UNIFIED LIBRARIES
LEAD - Morning Rose GHOST PATCH ALSO
PAD -SunGoddess Pad Bells GHOST PATCH, THIS WAS EXAMPLE PATCH I SENT TO YOU
PLUCK - Woody Snapper NOT GHOST, OTHER PATCH FROM CLOUD CITY AND OTHER FROM UNIFY STANDARD

So all of these ghost patches mentioned above won't load at all, only original one loads!?

There are no other ghost doubles left in my user library anymore !

We can fix this one step at a time.

Locate the following files and move them to another folder, somewhere NOT under the Unify Libraries folder:

In Libraries/User Library/Patches:

  • BASS - Airwave Dance Bass With Dim Pro.unify
  • BASS SPLIT - Plush Toys with Upright Bass and Piano+Pad.unify
  • PAD -SunGoddess Pad Bells 2.unify

In Libraries/Unify Standard Library/Patches:

  • BASS SPLIT - Deep Bass and FM_Steinway.unify
  • DRUM KIT - OMG Pop 1 Glitch.upf

In Libraries/PlugInGuru UniSCREAM 2020/Patches:

  • BASS SPLIT - Deep Bass and Ambient Dreamy leisure.unify
  • BPM - Chased In The Dark CG.unify
  • PAD - Morning Rose 2 .unify

After removing all eight of these files, do another FULL patch-database rebuild, and you should have no more "ghost doubles".

If you think any of those files you removed may have changes that you would like to recover, zip them up and send them to me, and I'll update them  so you can safely put them back.

In future, any time you want to make a new copy of a patch with your own changes, I recommend that you:

  • Click SAVE
  • CHANGE THE PATCH NAME
  • Click SAVE AS...
  • DO NOT change the file name in the Save dialog; use the one Unify provides, which should be the same as the NEW patch name + ".unify"

Ok, Thanks for you advice, Shane!

BUT maybe this is not repairing anything... I doubt ghostdoubles

still will appear ...and I always carefully choose "save as" when make edits !!

By the way, do you mean that first click SAVE, then change the patch name and then again SAVE AS??

Heh ... This is what I always do!! 😜

Yes. The "change the patch name" part is critical.

I too have "ghost" patches. All the patches in PlugInGuru DiscoverStation INST show up twice. The first one loads but it I click the second it immediately reverts to the first copy which loads. When using "Reveal in Finder" I notice that the first patch, which loads ends with .unify. For example "BELL - Celeste DS.unify". The ghost copy ends in .upf, like "BELL - Celeste DS.upf".

I have reinstalled DiscoverStation twice and rebuilt the database. Full rebuild.

How do I fix this?

The .unify patches may be early demo versions. I'd suggest deleting them all, then rebuilding the patch database.

Thanks! That worked. But why are these duplicates installed in the first place? I have downloaded the latest PlugInGuru DiscoverStation.guru file twice from my account and deleted the PlugInGuru DiscoverStation INST folder and rebuilt the patch database before installing again. And every time I get duplicate patches. So it seems that they are included in and installed by the PlugInGuru DiscoverStation.guru file.

Strange…

Did you ever find an explanation as to why I get duplicate patches when reinstalling PlugInGuru DiscoverStation INST?
Do you want me to try and reinstall again?

Without more details it's difficult to tell exactly, but see my response on April 6. I suggest you remove the entire offending library folder and re-install with a .guru file.

That is exactly what I did! Three times. In other words, I did deleted both the PlugInGuru DiscoverStation and the PlugInGuru DiscoverStation INST files and emptied the trash. And rebuilt the rebuilt the patch database in Unify. So not a trace of anything related to PlugInGuru DiscoverStation.

Then I installed the .guru file and every time I got duplicate files. One ending in .upf and one .unify.
Am I the only one who has had this problem?

And, btw, what is the difference between .upf and .unify?

I have .utf patches only in Unify Standard Library, PlugInGuru UniChill V1 and also in PlugInGuru DiscoverStation and PlugInGuru DiscoverStation INST since you suggested that I should delete the .unify patches from those two folders.
All other patches are .unify.

Sorry to bother you but this is a bit confusing…

@hummersalad

Unify itself stores patches in .unify format. When we prepare paid libraries (as opposed to free ones), we turn these into .upf (Unify patch format) files, which are encrypted. When we assemble these into a .guru file (basically a zip archive with a specific internal structure), we have to remember to delete the original .unify files, or you could see duplicates whenever both .upf and .unify versions of a given patch are present.

In Unify patch files, the library and patch name are encoded within the patch; renaming the file does not change the patch name, and putting the file into a different folder does not change the library name.

In light of the above, there are three possibilities:

  1. We might have accidentally prepared the .guru file you're using with both .upf and .unify versions of some (or all) patches.
  2. You might have older versions of some patches, which don't get overwritten by the newer ones, because the file names differ.
  3. You might have older versions of some patches, which don't get overwritten because they are in the wrong folder.

Could you please make, and post here as an attachment, a zip archive containing two files:

  1. The .guru file you're having trouble with
  2. Your Presets.db file, which you will find inside Unify's main Libraries folder.

To find your Presets.db file, go to Settings and click the "Open..." button, to reveal Unify's main data folder, then double-click the Libraries sub-folder and locate the Presets.db file inside.

Shane, I have also managed to create ghost patches by futzing about in the filesystem, copying and pasting files and dirs.

I succeeded in cleaning those up. Will try to retrace my steps and see if i can recreate ghosts, will keep you posted.

Our early decision to separate Unify's library and patch names from folder/file names has proved fateful. It has its benefits, but also drawbacks.

Since I seem to be the only person in the world who experience this problem and I strongly suspect that you believe that I am an idiot and that I am to blame, I suggest we just forget about it and pretend that it never happened.

I think no such thing. I'm very sorry you're having these issues, and I'm more than happy to help. I asked you to zip and attach copies of your Presets.db file, and any .guru files that are causing trouble, so I can analyze them. I can't go any further without these.

I have downloaded the latest .guru file from my account, twice! And done a "clean" install three times. I have not in any way changed any files or folders in the Unify folder besides trashing the PlugInGuru DiscoverStation and the PlugInGuru DiscoverStation INST folders so that I could reinstall! Since I am using the same .guru file as everybody else and NO ONE else has this problem so it is obvious that I must have caused it!

I don't have time to investigate. Too much trouble for no reward…

@hummersallad

A thousand apologies, this is our fault!

It took me a while to locate the .guru files for DiscoverStation, and exactly as you said, there are extra files in the DiscoverStation INST folder. I have fixed the offending .guru file and re-uploaded the entire package, and I have also uploaded just that .guru file to

https://www.dropbox.com/s/vnrgdrckjc3alu0/PlugInGuru%20DiscoverStation.guru?dl=0

However, you don't even need to use this updated .guru file. All you need do is:

  • Open the DiscoverStation INST folder (under Unify's Libraries folder)
  • Go into the Patches folder inside there
  • Select all .unify files and DELETE them
  • Run Unify and rebuild your patch database.

I am dreadfully sorry that this mistake of ours has given you such grief. Let me know if you have any further trouble with "ghost" patches.
