Hi, I noticed during John's last few videos, that the number of total patches on his system was displayed on the lower right hand side. I expected that I would see my total once I had installed 1.7.2 but didn't see it. Is there a switch or a preference setting for this?

Yes, you need to check the box "Show patch count" in system settings about mid-way down.
