Softube OSD SysEx messages cause Obsession Tuning knob to move.

I got Obsession yesterday and while I was checking out some of the ‘unified’ presets, I noticed that they were all going out of tune within moments of selecting them.  Sounded interesting for a while, but when all presets behaved like that, I knew it wasn’t the PluginGuru on a detune trip. I’m using Logic Pro X on MacOS Catalina, everything on the laptop is completely up-to-date.

The problem turned out to be my Softube Fader. When Softube OSD software control is on, it keeps sending SysEx data to Logic. That causes the Obsession ‘Tuning’ knob in the Master section of the synth plugin to incrementally move forward in a clockwise direction.

Happens while Obsession is in stand-alone mode and also when it’s in use in Unify. Does not happen when I open Obsession in Native Instruments Komplete Kontrol.

Intriguing. A few thoughts:

  1. Are you sure your Fader is only sending SYSEX data? If there's any chance it might be sending CC data, try right-clicking Obsession's tuning knob and selecting "MIDI Forget".
  2. Is there any way you could capture some of your Fader's MIDI output to a file, zip and post here?
  3. If it truly is only SYSEX, I may have to add a checkbox to Unify's built-in MIDI Filter plug-in, to filter out SYSEX.

@getdunneHere’s a snapshot of some of the messages the Fader unit sends when the Softube OSD is active. I used Midi Monitor by snoize to record the data. When I unplug the Fader unit, nothing else in my system sends anything that affects Obsession. I tried the Midi Forget, but it didn’t help.

Let me know if you want any further info.

Here’s a link to a short YouTube video that shows what is going on: https://youtu.be/yD88LFyVBEs

I recorded this with the plug in standalone, but it moves at exactly the same pace when it’s in Unify.

@spaceman-ted

OK, so your Softube Fader spews MIDI SysEx messages out continuously (a quick Google search reveals this is a known issue), and these seem to be interfering with Obsession. I've just added another checkbox to Unify's built-in MIDI Filter plug-in, to suppress System-Common (including SysEx) and Real-Time MIDI messages, and it's ON by default. This will appear in the next Unify update, and you can try putting an instance of MIDI Filter in front of your Obsession instances.
