Hi,

I have been enjoying my Steinberg Retrologue plugin and layering 3 or 4 of them in a patch.  It was amazing to see how little processing it takes so I decided to make a mega patch.  This involved 3 instances of Unify within a single Unify patch, each one made up from 3 or 4 instances of Retrologue.

When I originally loaded the sub-presets into unify all was working well.  I saved my patch and tried reloading it to check it was all good.

This is where there seems an issue.  It reloaded the patches ok and when opening up the Retrologue instruments they individually opened ok. When trying to play the patch only the first instance of unify reacted to the MIDI input.  The other two lit up but no sound at all from the output or meters.  I tried changing MIDI source and the input on each Unify but nothing happened.  I then tried replacing the second layer for an instrument layer and this worked fine without re-opening Unify.

This was tried in the standalone and the VST within Cubase.

I re-saved the patch under a different name using one instance of Unify and one of Retrologue and another of DS Thorn.  This patch loaded fine.

Regards,

Chris

@chrisg-uk

When problems like this arise, please attach a zipped copy of the patch (.unify file) to a post here, so I can analyze it. Thanks.

Hi,

I have attached the two files as requested.  The 'Bell' patch contains three instances of Unify.  The other patch was created using this 'Bell' patch but I replaced the 2nd and 3rd instance of Unify for individual instruments and these reloaded every time ok.

Regards,

Chris

Hi Chris,

I tested your patches, and found the same results you reported. The second one was particularly revealing, because you seem to have used one instance of the Unify VST (i.e., VST2), and two instances of the VST3. The VST3 layers are the ones which don't sound, as they don't seem to even receive MIDI from the main Unify (stand-alone in my testing).

I did a number of experiments, eventually whittling it down to just one layer with one instance of the Unify VST3, with the default "Sine Wave Synth" sound. This plays correctly when first created, but if I save and recall it, there is no sound, and apparently no MIDI transfer either. If I open the embedded Unify instance, and click notes on its ShowMIDI keyboard, it plays, so it's definitely a MIDI-related issue.

This is interesting, and I will pursue it more when I have time, but for now, you can avoid the problem entirely by only ever using the VST Unify plug-in for embedded instances. For Unify v1.1 I am reworking the entire approach to using Unify instances on Unify layers, and even the VST plug-in won't be needed; there will be a new built-in Unify instrument. This has its own challenges, but assuming I'm successful, renders any quirks of using the VST/VST3 plug-ins somewhat moot.

@getdunne

Thanks for the update.  I didn't even think about the VST/VST3 versions.  I will be careful when creating in future!!

Cheers, Chris 👍
