when I open up an individual synth I've added or midi effects I can't turn knows and play at the same time... is there a setting for this?

I really like being able to hear sounds morph real-time as that's what makes it fun rather than having to X off the synth and then play... when I watched the tutorials on youtube, he's not having the same issue as me but maybe he was playing an external midi controller...

any insight here guys?

Hello @josiahsonfire,

I think you will find how to assign plugin parameters to a Macro knob with the manual here.

https://pluginguru.net/unify/manual/doku.php?id=realtime-params#adding_a_parameter

Hope that helps. Feel free to ask further questions, please.

Greetings and God bless, Marius

sorry I'm a bit confused here... will this sort out the issue that I can play my computer keyboard whilst adjusting parameters in any plugin?

Adjusting knobs and playing should work at the same time. When you say "my computer keyboard" do you mean a MIDI keyboard, or a typing keyboard?

Hello @transmit,

I think we have to wait for an admin. In the meantime I unsubscribed from all posts and topics.

Are you using the computer keyboard to play notes somehow? There are some issues with keystrokes getting through to the DAW, which I'll be looking into after NAMM.

I've also had a problem with using a keyboard just for data entry to a vst loaded into Unify.

I use Windows 10 with Sonar. In the DAW, when I open a vst window which might require me to enter data, there is an icon of a keyboard at the top right corner that I can click. Without clicking that icon, the input from the keyboard will be passed to the DAW and not the vst window. When I click the keyboard icon on, the input passes to the vst. Thus in Cthulhu, if I want to type the name of an arp I have created, I must click on the icon.

The problem with Unify is that the vst windows do not have the icon to allow the change of the input target. Thus in Cthulhu (and other vsts that require input), I have no way to enter data via the keyboard. Mouse clicks work, but not keyboard entry. I have passed this problem on to John, but maybe that is the same problem here with the problem person here. Some vsts will allow you to play notes via a computer keyboard and thus this may be a manifestation of the same problem.

I would almost bet that this keyboard icon I see in Sonar is provided by the DAW to allow redirection of keyboard entry. This is a limitation of Unify unless there is some way to provide the redirection through Unify.

Hello @josiahsonfire@larry-ludwick and @getdunne,

there is a free as in GPL virtual MIDI piano keyboard for Windows and Mac that generates MIDI messages on your computer keyboard.

It could be adapted by Shane to give this functionality to Unify in Show MIDI view or perhaps as an additional MIDI filter.

1.  This program has to be started before Unify so that its MIDI driver will be recognized in Unify settings.

2. Unfortunately it works but needs window focus to generate MIDI messages, so playing and tweaking plugins at the same time isn't possible.

@getdunne

yes exactly...

let's say I open unify, if I use a preset or my own synths, I have to click the red X and get rid of the window and make sure I'm on the main Unify interface before I can use my computer keyboard to play anything

To give a little more info I am using Ableton Live 10 and on a Macbook Pro  (Sierra 10.12.6)

There is definitely an issue with Unify capturing keystrokes when it doesn't have to. I will be looking into this, but it may take a while to fix.

@getdunne (I fear this bug is still there)

For example, MIDI keys works totally fine in Unify whilst there is focus on the keys area, but then select the Library, maybe change the preset and musical typing stops working, that's really rather annoying

Definitely being able to arrow down to the next patch and play a few notes or chords, e.g. C Major keys "A" + "D" + "G" without having to use mouse or an external (real) MIDI controller/keyboard would be very welcome

Mac workaround but not quite, MIDI keys is a neat tool but it's clumsy as you have to set it up with a hot key like Shift+Control to get the above result... which is ok but then Unify doesn't accept Shift + Control and arrow down as meaning next patch anymore and so you have to let go of Shift+Control - for anyone looking for it, it's here https://github.com/flit/MidiKeys - If Unify could ignore the key modifiers and allow that Shify + Control + Down combo to work that's actually a good enough solution for me 🙂

I don't classify this as a bug. Unify was designed for use with a MIDI keyboard/controller. Anything it can do without one is a bonus at best, not a priority. I'll try to bear this in mind as I work on Unify 2, but can't promise anything.

@getdunne yeah it's more anything useful like a quick preview is good to have, I've mustered 60,000 patches in my database, and many have similar titles. If you have the Korg M1 VST handy it has a 'preview' feature where it places a short sequence of notes and chords, that's a bit fancy, but a great feature. Kontact/Konplete I think the patch author supplies a demo example, that's cool but hey that's a whole slew of involvement vs sending a short MIDI note on/off event or replaying a user-supplied .mid file over and over maybe.

(Mac users with 'MIDI keys' app, you can also click the Unify down arrow or the dice icon with the mouse and kind of get an audition if holding the shift+ctr+z keys down, so I'm happy enough with what I've got)
