It would be usefull if there is any information ( maybe by colour ) if a layer contains a assigned control knob.
the first layer usually contains assigned control knobs. But you have to look at least in layer 2 if there is a assigned one to be sure.
normally if there is nothing in layer 2, 3 and 4 are also empty - but that is not mandatorily

I'm pretty sure you mean "if any of a layer's parameters are assigned to any macro knob".
