Problems discovered in using the Reason v11 Rack Plugin as a VST inside Unify.. on Windows 10 (v1809).

1. The VST does not receive incoming audio and therefore cannot be used as an insert or aux device within Unify. Audio seems to bypass the VST as if it isn't there.

2. The VST does not appear to respond to mouse wheel movement.

3. Reason 'player' devices (ie. MIDI effects) have degraded functionality in Unify v1.1.2 compared to v1.0.12.

3a. MIDI-generating Reason player devices (eg. a pulse/gate generator) which sync to MIDI clock, used to play nicely in Unify v1.0.12. Now they don't play at all, regardless of how one attempts to trigger them (either manually or by way of Unify transport controls).

3b. MIDI-filtering Reason player devices (eg. note-to-chord transformer) do not receive any incoming MIDI.

Both points are true regardless of whether the device is placed on a Unify MIDI effect layer, or used as a MIDI insert on an instrument layer, or even within the 'rack' of the instrument itself.

4. ..Wow this is actually a broader issue that I thought. It would appear that the Reason Rack Plugin doesn't receive any incoming MIDI whatsoever now. I can't even play basic instrument devices any more 🙁 No wonder point 3.

Appears to have been fixed. Thanks 🙂

Yes, something has gone wrong with getting MIDI to the Reason Rack plug-in. John pointed this out to me a few days ago, but it doesn't seem to be due to anything I have changed. I will be looking into this further, and will provide a fix as soon as I can.

Unify v1.1.3 will be available within the hour. Supports Reason Rack plug-in as an instrument, and the Reason Rack Effect plug-in as either an audio effect or a MIDI effect.

Actually mouse wheel works ok inside Unify standalone plugin windows but seemingly not Unify-as-a-VST plugin windows.

  1. I can't replicate this. What is your OS/configuration?
  2. What if you click once in the embedded Unify's GUI window before using the mouse wheel?
  3. When you say "Unify as a VST plugin" are you using "VST" generically? In Unify v1.1.x, Unify is available as a built-in plug-in, and that is now the recommended way to use it for embedding.

Whilst I try to wrap my head around your third point, I'll answer your first two questions:

OS is Windows 10 (v1809); what do you want to know about configuration?

I'm attempting to use the Unify VST inside Ableton. I load the Unify VST(3) as an instrument on an Ableton track, then inside Unify I load the Reason Rack Plugin VST on an instrument layer. Everything works excellently except the mouse wheel, which is almost essential inside the Reason Rack especially as I can't seem to resize its window. It makes no difference to focus the window with a click.

I realise you are having some challenges with VST threes. I can't test further just now but I'll report back later...

I'm working on a maintenance update for Unify, which (among other things) will allow resizing of plug-ins whose GUIs are resizable.

Thanks for the feedback about click/focus. Handling of mouse-wheel events is broadly similar to keyboard events, which I'll readily admit we're not yet very good at either. Hardly a day goes by when John doesn't ask if I can fix keyboard-event handling so he can use keyboard shortcuts in Logic Pro. This is all handled by the JUCE code framework, and I'm not yet able to follow it well enough. I'll get there someday.
