Turn off or bypass layers?

Can I turn a layer off or bypass a layer completely to save CPU? Just not MIDI on/off.

Reason being is that I am creating live patches with a lot of heavy weight VSTs. I usually don't need them all enabled at once, but I want them in the patch ready to go so as I'm performing in real-time, I can do stuff on the fly with them. Right now I'm using the MIDI on/off button, but I see the off layers are still impacting CPU. I'm getting spikes clipping the audio, and trying to cut that down.

I noticed Bypass on effects or the Master layer seems to turn it off completely (no CPU usage). Any chance we can get this for Instruments too?

Thank you!

Interesting request, thank you. I have added this to the to-do list, but I'll need to think about it a while.

For now, consider using a macro knob to enable/disable all effects on a layer, and also turn on/off midiEnable for the layer. Instrument plug-ins cannot be fully disabled, but most instrument plug-ins have little CPU impact when they are not playing notes.

Hi, here are some examples that may inspire you:

  • Studio One "plugin nap" - stop CPU consumption when there is no audio passing thru the plugin https://pcaudiolabs.com/new-features-included-in-studio-one-5-4-plug-in-nap/
  • TBPro Audio CS5501 Channel Strip - "smart silent processing" (similar to "plugin nap")
  • MuLab "Auto Bypass" - this is the one I use with Unify either by loading my plugins to MuLab and then loading that into Unify layer (see the screenshot), or by loading the whole Unify instance to MuLab plugin slot. The result is similar to "plugin nap".
