Hi all,

The free & open sources Surge synthesizer just got an update, so I thought it would be a good candidate for being Unified. I have started doing the factory banks.

https://surge-synthesizer.github.io/

The common format is VST3, and it has no VST2 so I will do the VST3 version.

Bravo, thank you!

VST3 should be fine, and the resulting Unify patches should work on both Mac and Windows. Let's find out!

Okay...619 patches later, I have the Factory Soundbank for Surge Unified. There are a few Template Patches included and 3 Vocoder patches that I included to be complete. Not sure if they can be used inside of Unify using CombBox or not.

I did not assign Macro knobs since I think you guys have an easier way to do that.

Where do you want them Shane and John?

I will plan on doing the included 3rd party patches at some point. Any ideas on how to organize/name/give credit, etc?

Please send me a link to the library and we can finalize it and host it for everybody.... we typically credit all the patches author as "PlugInGuru" for these types of libraries. Thank you for doing this - I REALLY was interested in selecting Surge to be included in Unify but it's not possible since it is being worked on by so many people and being updated often. That type of activity is great to see for the plugin but challenging when you're building a stable environment.... people asking all the time for the latest version etc just made it not feasible.

But a Unified Library is WONDERFUL! Send a link to john@pluginguru.com when you can. Thank you!

So, as previously mentioned, I've been unifying the 3rd Party Presets for Surge as well, but have run into a snag. Most of the categories make sense, but there are a few odd ones in there. What do you suggest I do when I get to the oddball ones like in the attached image? I want to make sure they make sense, but these do not.

@despondo

I'd call most of those patches SYNTH.

1,395 Surge 3rd Party patches have been Unified and sent off to John. Hopefully released to the community soon!

@getdunne seems for me at least VST3 isn't loading up.

Anyone else having problems with Surge not loading?

I just get the message in the attached jpg - tried reinstalling Surge but still not happening.

Unify doesn't know where to find your third-party plug-ins unless you tell it; see https://pluginguru.net/unify/manual/doku.php?id=scanning.

@getdunne Ahhh, Newby mistake - I didn't scan my VST3 folder thinking that they couldn't be used in Unify - all scanned and working fine. Thanks for the rapid response!

@hadge

No problem - enjoy Unify!

Note you don't have to scan every plug-in you have, although you might want to do so once, at some point. The easier way is just to register plug-ins individually, whenever you want to use them.

@getdunne Cheers, I did the whole lot! But since I intend to make use of them all I Unifuy anyway at least it's done now.

Keep up the great work.

I'll be getting to these sometime. I am busy Unifying the Korg M1 at the moment.

Thank you so much for doing this! Surge is a great synth so I am happy to have it unified.

I have a few questions/remarks. You seem to have followed Surge's patch categories, so a couple do not follow Unify's Patch Naming Guidelines.

  • Author (for all patches) is Plugin Guru. It should be PlugInGuru.
  • Please check that the Categories match those you use as a name prefix, following the Patch Naming Guidelines. The categories are a big mess because of inconsistencies. For instance, you use WIND, correctly, as a plugin name prefix, but Winds for Categories and Tags.
  • I would suggest leaving Tags empty unless they add something to Categories. See my suggestions here.
  • KEYS should be KEY
  • MPE is not a category. I would listen what they are or otherwise call them SYNTH, and add MPE as a tag.
    • For instance, Bloom sounds like a BELL, and Pad Plink 'n' Move like a PAD
  • For presets with MPE, please enable MPE
  • TEMPLATE should be TEMP
  • VOCODER is not a Unify category---maybe it should be?

The guidelines do not have CHORD, LEAD and SPLIT but do have BPM versions of those, so I think those are good to go.

Once again, thank you very much for putting in all this hard work.
