MIDI LAYERS

The tune is driven by 4 X MIDIBoxes playing 4 different tracks from a midi file of John Coltrane's arrangement of Take 5.

INSTRUMENT LAYERS

4. Guitar: I made a patch earlier of Quiet Music Guitar Lite ( https://quietmusic.eu/classic-gtr-lite)

with FrontDAW ( https://unitedplugins.com/FrontDAW/)

and Naturaliser ( https://rastsound.com/downloads/naturaliser/).

The above patch was included as an embedded Unify layer

and with Cymatics Diablo Lite ( https://cymatics.fm/pages/diablo-lite) to give it a bit more presence

and Blue Cat's Triple EQ 4 ( https://www.bytesin.com/software/Blue-Cat-s-Triple-EQ/) with a mid cut to fit it into the mix.

PROCESS

The production process involved setting things up and iterating through adding and removing things until the above.

Unify makes the iterative process totally friction free:

1. Set up and configure (Play Only & One Shot) a midi file in MIDIBox

      (Use MuseScore ( https://musescore.org/en) to find out what instruments are on the tracks)

2. Duplicate the first MIDIBox layer and change track number to cover the number of tracks in the midi file

3. Create instrument layers linked to the midi box instances and add appropriate plugins/patches to match the instruments

4. Iterate though duplicating/muting instrument layers and swapping plugin instruments/patches until it sounds right

5. Make sure the levels are right

6. EQ any issues (in this case the guitar was notch filtered to avoid muddying up the piano )

      Use Voxengo Span ( https://www.voxengo.com/product/span/) to inspect the frequency spectrum of each layer

7. Master for streaming. I used iZotope's Ozone elements ( https://www.izotope.com/en/shop/ozone-elements.html)

Done! And don't forget to save the BPM with the patch...
